1931 Duesenberg J Murphy Disappearing Top Roadster 2

Coach Building the one off Murphy Disappearing Top Body

Coach Building the one off Murphy Disappearing Top Body : The 52 degree rack of the windshield has made this coach-building project exceedingly challenging. To our knowledge only one Murphy disappearing top roadster was produced with this sporty windshield rake. The cowl wood has been extensively reshaped and formed, to its original specifications. The raked windshield has been properly fit to the cowl.

The last of the priming is complete, and color continues to be layed down on the car

The last of the final primer has been sprayed on the inside of the bonnet, now the task continues to block sand the car smooth for its final trip in the spray booth to receive the Glasurit 90 Line Waterborne finish. From the bottom to the top no area is left untouched, it is meticulously sanded and prepared to receive the same quality of finish on the underside of the car as the top panels.

First look at the final color

As promised the Series 1.5 Jaguar Roadster made the trip into the booth to receive our first look at the final color Opalescent Silver Blue. In this session we sprayed all the hard to reach places, the firewall , interior compartment and trunk. Many of these areas will be covered by interior, but on our cars, every inch of the car receives the same quality treatment as the exterior. The floors were sprayed on the interior with a sound deadening material that is under the paint, to make for a quite cabin.

Final Prime prior to paint

The tedious under coat work is now complete, the poly coat has been block sanded in preparation for the final primer. 3 coats of Glasurit Primer have been applied to form the final surface that will be prepared for paint. That surface will now just be block sanded one last time in progressive grits to 800 grit. In preparation for the final base coat / clear coat finish to be applied. Now you can see the clean body lines and proper gaps , as you would expect for a proper show car.

Spray Poly Applied

The last step in the major body work now has come to a close. Multiple coats of spray poly have been applied over a fresh base of epoxy primer. The spray poly will act as the final coat of body filler so the Jaguar can be block sanded as a unit in preparation for its final priming and finish. The poly coat ensures a smooth base for that deep Concours finish

Final Fitting

The tedious process of final fitting is now drawing to a close. In order to bring you back up to date since it has been awhile since our last post. The Jaguar received a proper Series 1.5 Bonnet, replacing the Series 2 one that was on the Jaguar when it arrived. The entire 1.5 bonnet was striped down to bare metal, all inner structures media blasted and repaired. A new center section and lower mouth were metal finished to match the original fenders and structure.

Body - Finish Welding

The body goes back into the media-blasting booth after the new floors and trunk are welded in, and now Justin does the finishing welds before the body filler is applied.
