1936 marked the fifth year for the V12 power plant, with a horsepower increase to 150 HP, the 1936 V12 was a excellent performing car. The art deco designs were in full effect at Cadillac in 1936, with the styling changing slightly from year to year. With the horsepower increase in 1936 the V12 Cadillac series 85 cars were excellent performers as well as a sleek art deco design.
Offered here is a all original 1936 V12 Cadillac series 85 sedan. The V12 motor is currently in running and driving condition (and is safe to be driven around the parking lot, mechanical details follow), showing only 57,000 miles which I believe to be original. The black lacquer paint is original and showing its age, with some area being worn through. The V12 has had some minor mechanical work done over the last few years, such as a fuel system cleaning, and recent brake work (I am not sure how extensive the work was). The twelve cylinder engine starts up and runs well, with good oil pressure, the exhaust manifold gasket is leaking and will require replacing. The tires and wiring are original and will require replacing. I have driven the car around our industrial park and the car shifts very easily, and exhibits good power. The brakes are four wheel hydraulic and function well. This car has been off the road for many years and will require some servicing before being put back into service, but I feel that the main mechanical components are in good original condition.
The engine components are all original and correct with the very hard to find proper air cleaners and carburetors.
The interior of the Cadillac is all original and untouched. The dashboard, is like brand new with all of its proper original paint. The Cadillac is fitted with the Banjo steering wheel, which is in good condition as well. The gauges all still appear to work. The interior is intact but does have some mouth damage, especially in the headliner area. All the original handles are in excellent condition which is rare for a Cadillac. The car is still fitted with its window shades, and all of its jeweled cats eye lighters.
The body is very straight and rust free with excellent door fit. Even the running boards are not rotted, they do have some surface rust on the bottom, and maybe a few minor rust holes. The floors are good as seen in the photos. Even the fenders and hood are not badly dinged or dented. This was not an abused car, or a car that was ever left out in the elements. All the proper exterior handles and badging are present. It is fitted with all the original options including the tire covers, hubcaps and trim rings, banjo wheel, and a heater.
We believe this was a NY car since new, and was most likely delivered to Sampson Air Force base as the Generals personal vehicle.
With some minimal work this mighty V12 can be returned to the road, and will make an excellent tour car. We restore and have owned many V12 and V16 Cadillac's, the 12 cylinder cars are fabulous road cars, that drive comfortably at 65+ MPH, these cars are excellent performers.
