1931 Packard 840 SUPER 8 Dual Windshield Sport Phaeton
Body style number 471 / Body Number 18
- Original and correct in every way.
- Rare factory options.
- Factory 1932 Dress Up Kit (Very few cars survive with this option, in any body style).
Platinum Classic Motorcars is very pleased to offer one of the most striking Packard Phaetons we have ever laid eyes on. This 840 Super 8 Phaeton, features the most unique blend of factory options I have ever seen, that make this truly a one-of-a-kind example of the 1931 Packard model year.
Take a close look at the photos of this phaeton, and you will see that all the options on the car give it a long, low, sleek styling that very few 1930's phaetons are able to achieve. The list of factory optional equipment is what sets this car apart from the rest. First and foremost, the car is fitted with DOUBLE REAR Spare tires, which are rarely seen and enhance the sleek side profile of the car. A original J and H Tonneau dual rear windshield is fitted to shield the rear seat passengers from the wind and weather, while out for their stately ride in this regal classic. Another unique touch that I have never seen before is the accessory Packard mirrors, integrated into the base of the parking lights, this would only have been an accessory for a car with rear mounted spares, and creates a unique and useable feature. Factory accessory Sport (spot lights) are mounted to both sides of the windshield. Chrome spoke wire wheels are fitted to the car as well. Then as if that list is not enough, it wears the factory 1932 Dress up kit. This kit is unique and was produced specially for the 1931 cars, as a standard 1932 radiator shell is a different dimension and can not be used on a 1931 car. This kit was fitted to cars that remained in the Packard's inventory to sell unsold units, as the 1932 Model had so many desirable cosmetic upgrades. This kit includes the V style radiator and stone guard (this was Packard first departure from the flat radiator shell), Externally mounted trumpet horns, the massive 1932 accessory bumper, and the dual 1932 tail lights. All of these features combine to make a truly unique and breathtaking example of the 471 Phaeton.
History of this unique Packard: The 1931 840 Phaeton you see here is a well known California car that has undergone a no-expense-spared restoration to the highest standards, which is attested to by the current condition of this 25 year old restoration. Starting with a correct and very solid original car, this Packard retains all of its original components, right down to the original Body, which was the 18th body produced. This proper Packard has all the rear and unique features of the Super 8 series cars, with the above long list of factory accessory equipment. To my knowledge, this is the ONLY example of a Dual rear spare phaeton fitted with the 1932 Upgrade kit. This is truly a unique example that still shows excellent and would be welcome for concours competition or Classic Car Club caravans.
The 1931 Packard Super 8 was built around the 120 HP, 384.8 Cubic Inch , Straight 8 cylinder motor, which is an excellent road car. These motors are smooth and reliable and with the high speed rear end fitted to this car is comfortable at modern highway speeds. It starts and runs very well and has been fully tuned and serviced.
