1919 Locomobile Model 48 Sportief
- Spectacular Low!!! Mileage example
- Was part of a prominent museum collection for the last 35 years
- All original unmodified Sportif Coachwork
Locomobile was the Rolls Royce of America, producing one of the highest quality cars produced from the turn of the century to the mid 1920's.
Offered here is the largest model they produced, the mighty model 48, which is 548 cubic inch 6 cylinder T Head engine producing almost 100 actual HP. Coupled to a massive 4 speed gearbox. Most of these mighty motorcars were scrapped because of the high value of all the metals in the car. The crankcase of this mighty motorcar is all bronze with copper water pipes and mostly cast brass components. Nothing but quality components were used in these very expensive cars, which were only sold to the who's who of wealthy Americans. Priced at a staggering $9500, Locomobile only worked on 4 cars a day.
Offered here is a spectacular original example that was part of the Crawford Museum collection for the last 35 years. This Model 48 shows extremely low mileage and exhibits very little wear. An excellent patina of a 1970's restoration that has been under careful museum exhibition for many years. The chassis and engine bay are correct. The Sportif touring car body is original and unaltered from new. Very few examples of the Sportif body style exist in unmodified condition. The paint is old and exhibits typical cracking and chips. The leather still is soft and useable as is and is in good condition for the age of the work.
Mechanically the motor sounds very strong and has the thumping exhaust note of a large displacement T Head engine. Pressurize the fuel system with a few pumps, turn the choke, and hit the starter button and away it goes!
Truly an excellent candidate for touring. The dashboard of the Locomobile is covered in gauges that would look more at home in an early airplane than a motorcar. A large imposing touring car fitted with double rear spare tires.
A great car that can be cleaned up and toured as is. Also an excellent candidate for a concours restoration. Our shop restored one of the rarest Model 48 Locomobiles with a Derham Carriage Co. convertible sedan body, custom built for JP Morgan's partners (Photos available).
